«The world, at this moment, needs both the scientist and the dreamer. God has blessed us with the most magnificent world we could imagine. We have barely taken the first steps toward seeing the light hidden in the darkness. Perhaps it will be the dreamer who uncovers the nature of dark matter; perhaps it will be the scientist who finds solutions to so much unnecessary hunger and senseless war. For both, the bounty of Earth and the cosmos is the currency in which they mint their hope. Humanity must use the gifts that have been bestowed upon it to survive. And then, as Paul Simon says, we will all be able to dance together ‘with diamonds on the soles of our shoes.’ And those diamonds will be the stars, and that dance will be one of peace.» (Translated from ‘El Universo’ Spanish edition, Byron Preiss, 1987).
I acquired this work that same year, 1987. I was still very young. I had no idea about almost anything, almost exactly like now. That year was when I began to dream and to get lost, although I also had no idea that I was lost and dreaming. I was not aware. I even lost this book. But not long ago it returned to me, bringing me joy. I always liked it quite a bit.
And today, I don’t really know why, I thought it would be useful to remember that. And to recall the little understanding we have of almost nothing, and how little, very little, times change.
