Where is the truth?

I remember once reading that Mark Twain believed the most important difference between fiction and reality is that fiction only needs to be believable. And I also recall that class from long ago when the teacher used a magnificent example to illustrate what verisimilitude consists of:

It is entirely plausible that Superman stretches his cape and takes flight; however, it would be utterly implausible for a gladiator like Spartacus to do the same while fighting in the arena of the circus.

Understanding and properly managing the concept of verisimilitude is essential to fully develop the complexity of our thinking.

Essentially, something is plausible if it fits the details to its context; and it must do so accurately. Because accuracy is the measure with which we will avoid a possible distortion or error.

But over time you realize that for something to be plausible, the accuracy of the details depends mainly on the fact that they are not excessive. Excessive details show that something doesn’t fit well. And although reality can sometimes seem implausible, the truth is that the vast majority of information we receive, and choose to accept or not accept, is not about the ‘truth of things’, but about their ‘plausibility’. So, pay close attention to the details.

    Roberto,
